CODA – FAQs

General

Q: What is energy storage?

A: Electricity generation and consumption must be perfectly balanced at all times to ensure the safety and reliability of the power grid. Energy storage – the ability to capture and store electricity – allows generators, transmission providers, utilities, and end-users to optimize their operations, reducing the cost of electricity and improving the reliability of the system as a whole.

Q: Are CODA’s energy storage systems available today?

A: CODA’s energy storage systems are commercially available today. Typically, we deliver solutions to our customers within three months of order placement. Please contact us to discuss the solution that’s right for you.

Q: How can I buy a CODA Energy Storage System?

A: You can contact us online or by phone to purchase a CODA energy storage system. We’ll need some basic information about your facility or project to design an optimal system and develop a quote that meets your specific needs. Your quote includes a system design, a business case, and a deployment plan.

Q: Where are CODA’s Energy Storage Systems (ESS) currently installed?

A: Our systems are installed throughout the United States. To learn about some of our projects and customers, visit .

Corporate

General

Q: When was CODA founded?

A: The CODA Energy team has built innovative energy storage solutions for more than a decade. In 2011, the electric-vehicle company CODA Automotive acquired EnergyCS — which began working on advanced energy storage and battery management systems in 2001 — and formed CODA Energy. Today, the company is independently managed and operated.

Q: Is CODA Energy interested in partnerships?

A: We partner with electricity generators, developers, technology providers, utilities, and end-users all across the globe. If you are interested in working with us, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact us at here .

Q: What industry standards do CODA Energy’s products meet?

A: CODA energy storage systems meet the highest industry and regulatory standards governing mechanical and electrical operation, communication and software performance, including: ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, NEC, CSA and UL.

Technology

General

Q: Where can CODA’s Energy Storage Systems be installed?

A: Our energy storage products are flexible and scalable, and provide valuable benefits across the entire grid – from the point of generation to the point of consumption. Our products are also suited for a wide range of climates, sites, and geographical markets. We incorporate proprietary thermal management systems into our products suited for indoor or outdoor environments.

Q: What size footprint do I need to accommodate a CODA energy storage system?

A: Our storage solutions scale incrementally in both power and energy capacity and integrate with your existing infrastructure. Our base system – the Core UDP Tower – is designed for space-constrained environments and is about the size of an average refrigerator.

Q: How long will the batteries last? When will the batteries needs replacing?

A: Battery life is highly dependent on how the system is used, and we select battery cells and other components based on your individual operational and performance needs. We warranty systems from two years to up to 10 years or greater, and provide planned battery-cell replacement solutions to keep the system running for more than 20 years.

Q: Can the system and batteries be recycled?

A: We take the environment seriously, and our energy storage systems are up to 98% recyclable. At end-of-life, any materials that are not recyclable can be responsibly disposed of.

Battery/Cells

Q: Where do CODA’s batteries come from?

A: Our systems are engineered to be flexible, which allows us to source battery cells from a wide selection of manufacturers around the globe. We take significant testing efforts in our in-house lab to choose the best solution for each application. We have tested more than 100 different technologies for economics, reliability, and safety.

Flexibility

Q: Will I need to replace the equipment I already own and use?

A: Generally, our systems fit within your existing infrastructure. If you send us information on your project, we’d be happy to provide additional details and develop a solution that’s best for you. Contact us here .

Q: Will your system work with the cell chemistries I prefer?

A: We’ve analyzed more than 100 cell chemistries in our in-house test facility and use that knowledge to build a system with standard components tailored specifically to your needs. If you have a cell chemistry in mind, we’ve likely tested it and can integrate it into your custom solution. We’d be happy to discuss the economics and implications of using different chemistries.

Reliability

Q: Can I maintain my system without unplanned downtime?

A: Yes, our Multi-Tower Power Control System manages each CODA Core™ UDP Tower independently – but in concert with other towers – for continuous operation, even during maintenance. A single tower unit within a larger installation can be taken offline to undergo maintenance, while the remaining system operates continuously and without interruption.

Safety

Q: What kind of testing have the cells been through?

A: Safety is a top priority for CODA. Every system we build is subjected to stringent testing at the cell, building block and system level to ensure system quality and compliance with strict consumer regulatory and industry safety requirements.

Q: How are the batteries regulated?

A: CODA energy storage systems meet the highest industry and regulatory standards governing mechanical and electrical operation, communication and software performance, including: ANSI, IEEE, NEMA, NEC, CSA and UL. Our products meet stringent safety standards, including:

  • UL 1642: Safety for lithium-ion batteries
  • UL 1973: Safety for batteries in light electric rail applications and stationary applications
  • UL 1741: Safety for inverters, converters, controllers and interconnection system equipment
  • UL 1998: Safety for non-networked embedded microprocessor software

Manufacturing

Q: Where are CODA’s Energy Storage Systems (ESS) manufactured?

A: CODA’s products are designed, engineered, and manufactured in Monrovia, California, a suburb of Los Angeles.

Maintenance/Warranty

Q: What is the standard warranty and what are the warranty options?

A: We warranty systems (including battery cells) from two years to up to 10 years or greater, and provide planned battery cell replacement solutions to keep the system running for more than 20 years. We offer installation, maintenance, remote monitoring, and additional service-plan options. Contact us and we’ll be happy to provide more details.

Q: Does CODA provide operations maintenance? What kind of support do you offer?

A: We provide service options, including maintenance and remote monitoring. Contact us for more details, and we’ll be happy to talk you through it.

Q: Does CODA install the ESS systems?
